Fostering Assessments

Fostering Assessments

Fostering Assessments are undertaken when individuals come forward to be assessed as foster carers either for the local authority or for an independent fostering agency. Prospective foster carers have a rigorous assessment of their suitability which includes obtaining references; undertaking sessions of group training as well as undergoing a medical to ascertain their level of physical and emotional health. The fostering assessment templates are provided by Coram BAAF Adoption and Fostering Academy. They provide clear guidance regarding how assessments and training should be undertaken and the criteria that must be met.

A Fostering Assessment will take approximately 12 weeks.

How do Fostering Assessments Work?

The assessor will undertake a number of visits to speak to the prospective foster carers; it is important to get to know the family as the prospective foster carers may have children of their own and their views also need to be considered. It is essential that the prospective foster carers have been provided with all of the information that they require before proceeding with their assessment. Foster carers should progress with their assessment on the basis that they are fully aware of what the role will entail.
